Control

A deck strategy that aims to answer every threat the opponent presents, then win with a single powerful finisher once the game is locked down. Control decks trade early-game weakness for late-game dominance.

How Control Works

Control decks say “no” to everything the opponent tries to do. Counterspells stop spells before they resolve. Board wipes reset the battlefield. Spot removal handles individual threats. Once the opponent runs out of resources, the control player deploys a single win condition with protection.

Key Characteristics

  • Heavy interaction — 15-25 removal, counters, and answers
  • Card advantage — refueling with draw spells to always have answers
  • Few win conditions — 2-4 finishers, often expensive but game-ending
  • High land count — 26-28 lands (60-card) to hit every land drop

Control in Different Formats

In Standard, control adapts to the threats of the format. In Modern, archetypes like Azorius Control use Teferi and counterspells. In Commander, Stax is control’s extreme form — locking opponents out entirely.

The Draw-Go Style

Classic “draw-go” control passes the turn with mana open, only acting on the opponent’s turn via instants and flash threats. This maximizes information — you see what the opponent does before deciding how to respond.

  • Stax — proactive control that prevents opponents from playing
  • Midrange — a flexible middle ground between control and aggro
  • Tempo — control-lite with a faster clock
