How Tutors Work

A tutor lets you search your library for any card (or a specific type) and put it into your hand or onto the battlefield. This effectively means your deck always has access to its best card for any situation.

Types of Tutors

Tutors in Commander

Tutors are the most debated cards in Commander. They make decks more consistent but also more repetitive — every game plays out the same when you always find the same combo. Many playgroups limit or discourage heavy tutor usage under Rule 0.

Tutor Chains

Advanced players chain tutors: use one tutor to find another tutor to find the exact card needed. This is especially powerful in combo decks assembling multi-piece win conditions.
