Why Play Aftermath Analyst

At two mana for a 3/3 body, you're getting reasonable stats with significant upside in graveyard-focused strategies. The mill effect helps fill your graveyard with lands and other resources while providing card selection, making it valuable in decks that want self-mill or graveyard synergies. The sacrifice ability essentially functions as a delayed Splendid Reclamation effect, allowing you to recover from mass land destruction or accelerate into powerful late-game plays by returning multiple lands at once.

Format Notes

Most impactful in Commander where games go longer and the graveyard accumulates more resources over time, particularly in landfall or land-based combo decks. Sees occasional play in Pioneer and Modern ramp strategies that can leverage the graveyard recursion, though competition is fierce at the two-mana slot. Standard applications depend heavily on the current removal suite and whether graveyard strategies have sufficient support in the format.

Combos & Synergies

Pairs excellently with Azusa, Lost but Seeking and other additional land drop effects to immediately capitalize on the mass land return. Works well alongside Titania, Protector of Argoth to create a massive token army when sacrificed with multiple lands in the graveyard. Crucible of Worlds creates strong synergy by letting you replay milled lands, while cards like Life from the Loam help stock your graveyard with more targets for the sacrifice ability.
