Why Play Farewell

Control decks value the incredible flexibility of choosing multiple modes to clear exactly what threatens you most. Against creature-heavy aggro, exile all creatures while leaving your planeswalkers intact; against artifact combo decks, strip their key pieces while maintaining your board presence. The exile effect prevents graveyard recursion that would otherwise circumvent traditional board wipes, making it particularly effective against decks relying on cards like Phoenix or reanimator strategies.

Format Notes

Commander sees the heaviest play due to the multiplayer format's need for versatile mass removal that can handle multiple threat types simultaneously. Pioneer and Modern control decks occasionally run one copy as a catch-all answer, though the six-mana cost competes with other premium removal spells. Historic control lists appreciate having access to both creature removal and graveyard hate in a single card slot.

Combos & Synergies

White control shells pair this with Teferi, Hero of Dominaria to maintain card advantage after clearing the board, using the planeswalker's card draw to rebuild faster than opponents. Rest in Peace effects become redundant when you can choose the graveyard exile mode, freeing up sideboard slots for other hate pieces. Elspeth, Sun's Champion provides an immediate board presence after wiping creatures, since her tokens enter after resolution.
