The Stack Beginner
What is The Stack?
The stack is a game zone in Magic: The Gathering where spells and abilities are placed after being cast or activated. The stack resolves in last-in, first-out (LIFO) order — the most recently added item resolves first.
How the Stack Works
- A player casts a spell or activates an ability — it goes on the stack.
- All players get priority to respond (add more spells/abilities on top).
- When all players pass priority in succession, the top item on the stack resolves.
- After each resolution, players get priority again before the next item resolves.
Key Interactions
The stack is what makes instant-speed interaction possible. You can respond to your opponent’s removal spell with a protection spell, counter their counterspell, or sacrifice a creature in response to exile removal. Understanding the stack is essential for competitive play.
What Doesn’t Use the Stack
- Lands — playing a land is a special action, not a spell.
- Mana abilities — tapping a land for mana doesn’t use the stack.
- Static abilities — these are always “on” and don’t go on the stack.
- Turn-based actions — drawing for the turn, combat damage, etc.
