What is Commander?
Commander (formerly known as Elder Dragon Highlander or EDH) is the most popular format in Magic: The Gathering. It is a multiplayer format where each player builds a 100-card singleton deck led by a legendary creature called their commander.
Format Rules
- Decks must contain exactly 100 cards, including the commander.
- No duplicate cards (except basic lands) — this is the “singleton” or “highlander” rule.
- All cards must fall within your commander’s color identity.
- Players start with 40 life (instead of the usual 20).
- 21 combat damage from a single commander is lethal (commander damage).
- Commanders start in the command zone and can be recast for an additional 2 mana each time (commander tax).
Why Commander Is Popular
Commander emphasizes social gameplay, creative deckbuilding, and self-expression. The singleton rule ensures variety, and the commander itself gives each deck a unique identity. It’s the default format at most local game stores and casual playgroups.
