Card Advantage Beginner

What is Card Advantage?

Card advantage is one of the most important strategic concepts in Magic: The Gathering. A player has card advantage when they have access to more cards (in hand, on the battlefield, or through effects) than their opponent.

Types of Card Advantage

  • Raw card draw — spells like Divination or Harmonize that draw multiple cards for one card spent.
  • Two-for-ones — a single card that deals with two or more opposing cards (e.g., Wrath of God destroying 4 creatures).
  • Virtual card advantage — making opponent’s cards irrelevant (e.g., having no creatures makes their removal spells dead draws).
  • Recurring value — permanents that generate cards over time, like Phyrexian Arena or Esper Sentinel.

Why It Matters

Magic games are won by resources. The player who sees and plays more cards has more options and more answers. Card advantage is the primary reason blue (the color with the most card draw) has historically been the strongest color in competitive Magic.
