Steps
  1. Activate Thopter Squadron's first ability twice by paying {2} and removing two +1/+1 counters from it, creating two 1/1 Thopter artifact creature tokens.
  2. Activate Ashnod's Altar by sacrificing a Thopter, adding {C}{C},
  3. Crime Novelist triggers, causing you to add {R} and put a +1/+1 counter on it.
  4. Activate Thopter Squadron's second ability by paying {1} and sacrificing the other Thopter token.
  5. Ashnod and Crime Novelist trigger.
  6. Resolve the Crime Novelist trigger, adding {R} and putting a +1/+1 counter on it.
  7. Resolve the Ashnod trigger, copying Thopter Squadron's ability.
