Why Play Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth

Legendary lands and utility lands become significantly more powerful when they tap for black mana, making this an excellent mana-fixing tool for multicolor decks. The global effect benefits opponents as well, but the advantage typically goes to the player who built their deck to exploit having additional black mana sources. Deploy it early in games where you need consistent black mana access, or hold it until you can immediately capitalize on the extra mana it provides to your existing lands.

Format Notes

Commander sees the heaviest play for this card, where the singleton format makes mana fixing crucial and the multiplayer nature amplifies its impact across multiple opponents' lands. Modern and Legacy decks occasionally include it as a one-of to enable powerful black spells or activate abilities that require black mana. Pioneer adoption remains limited but growing, particularly in decks that run demanding mana costs or utility lands that benefit from the additional mana type.

Combos & Synergies

Cabal Coffers becomes dramatically more powerful when every land on the battlefield produces black mana, often generating 8+ mana in the mid-to-late game. Kormus Bell creates an army of 1/1 Swamp creatures from all lands in play, though this symmetrical effect requires careful timing and follow-up removal. Cards with swampwalk like Filth or Dauthi creatures gain unblockable status against most opponents, turning utility into immediate pressure.
