Why Play Unwinding Clock

Artifact-heavy decks gain tremendous value by essentially doubling their mana rocks and utility artifacts throughout the game. The effect shines in multiplayer formats where you're untapping your artifacts during multiple opponents' turns, creating explosive plays and maintaining board presence. Best deployed when you already have several mana-producing artifacts in play, as the four-mana investment pays dividends immediately in subsequent turns.

Format Notes

Commander represents the primary home for Unwinding Clock, where it's become a staple in artifact-based strategies and colorless decks. The multiplayer nature of Commander amplifies its power significantly compared to 1v1 formats like Modern or Legacy, where the effect is less impactful. While legal in competitive formats, it sees minimal play due to the high mana cost and narrow application outside dedicated artifact strategies.

Combos & Synergies

Mana rocks like Sol Ring and Mana Vault become powerhouses when untapping multiple times per turn cycle, enabling massive plays on your own turn. Voltaic Key creates redundancy while also providing additional untap effects for your most important artifacts. Winter Orb transforms from a symmetrical stax piece into a one-sided lockout, as your artifacts remain unaffected while opponents struggle under the restriction.
