Necromancy

{2}{B}
Enchantment

You may cast Necromancy as though it had flash. If you cast it any time a sorcery couldn't have been cast, the controller of the permanent it becomes sacrifices it at the beginning of the next cleanup step.<br>When Necromancy enters, if it's on the battlefield, it becomes an Aura with "enchant creature put onto the battlefield with Necromancy." Put target creature card from a graveyard onto the battlefield under your control and attach Necromancy to it. When Necromancy leaves the battlefield, that creature's controller sacrifices it.

Why Play Necromancy

At three mana, you get access to any creature from any graveyard at instant speed, making it one of the most efficient reanimation spells available. The flash ability creates powerful blowout potential - stealing a game-winning creature during combat or responding to removal by bringing back your own threats. Black-based midrange and reanimator decks particularly value its versatility and low mana cost compared to other reanimation effects.

Format Notes

Legacy sees the most competitive play, where it fits into Show and Tell decks and various combo strategies that can abuse instant-speed reanimation. Commander players frequently include it as reliable, budget-friendly reanimation that can target any player's graveyard for political leverage. The card has never faced banning issues, though its power level keeps it relevant across eternal formats where graveyard strategies thrive.

Combos & Synergies

Pairs exceptionally well with Entomb effects to set up instant-speed reanimation during your opponent's turn, creating surprise blockers or threats. Academy Rector becomes a powerful tutor target since you can flash in Necromancy to reanimate it and immediately search for any enchantment. Sneak Attack decks sometimes include it as additional ways to cheat expensive creatures into play, while graveyard-filling cards like Buried Alive set up multiple reanimation targets.
