Why Play Fling

Aggressive red decks love the burst potential of turning a medium-sized creature into immediate face damage while dodging removal or unfavorable combat. The spell shines when your creatures are about to die anyway—whether to board wipes, targeted removal, or losing combat—letting you extract maximum value before they hit the graveyard. Fling also serves as a powerful finisher in creature-based combo decks, where you can sacrifice a large threat for the final points of damage needed to close out games.

Format Notes

Most impactful in Pauper where cheap, efficient damage spells are premium, often appearing in aggressive red decks and sacrifice-based strategies. Commander sees regular play in sacrifice-themed decks and aggressive builds that want additional reach, particularly those running large creatures that can be flung for massive damage. Modern and Pioneer applications are more niche, typically appearing in fringe combo decks rather than mainstream competitive play.

Combos & Synergies

Ball Lightning and other evasive creatures with high power create immediate threats that opponents must answer or face a devastating Fling follow-up. Creatures with death triggers like Mogg Fanatic or Blood Artist generate additional value when sacrificed, making the exchange more favorable. Token generators such as Krenko's Command provide expendable fodder that can be flung for damage while preserving your more valuable permanents.
