Pioneer Format Guide

Pioneer is Magic’s mid-range non-rotating format, using cards from Return to Ravnica (October 2012) forward. It’s more powerful than Standard but more accessible than Modern — making it the perfect stepping stone for competitive players who want a deeper card pool without the steep investment.

Why Play Pioneer?

  • No Rotation: Your cards stay legal permanently.
  • Accessible: No fetch lands means simpler (and cheaper) mana bases than Modern.
  • Competitive: Pioneer is a major Pro Tour format with strong organized play support.
  • Arena Support: Explorer format on MTG Arena closely mirrors Pioneer’s card pool.
  • Balanced Power: Powerful enough to be interesting, not so fast that games end on turn 3.

Building for Pioneer

Pioneer decks are 60 cards minimum with a 15-card sideboard. Without fetch lands, the format rewards clean two-color mana bases and efficient spells. The banned list is actively maintained to keep the format healthy. Midrange strategies tend to thrive, but aggro, combo, and control all have strong representation.
