Why Play Emrakul, the Promised End

Getting a diverse graveyard makes casting this Eldrazi surprisingly affordable, often costing just 6-8 mana in the mid-to-late game. The mind control effect essentially gives you two extra turns - one controlling your opponent and another after they take their extra turn, creating a massive tempo swing. Deploy Emrakul when you can fill your graveyard with different card types through self-mill, fetchlands, and varied spells, then use the control turn to attack yourself with their creatures or waste their resources.

Format Notes

Most powerful in Commander where longer games naturally fill graveyards and the political implications of mind control create memorable moments. Sees occasional play in Modern ramp decks and Pioneer reanimator strategies, though the 13-mana cost limits competitive viability. Legacy and Vintage players sometimes include it in Sneak Attack or Show and Tell builds as an alternative threat that can't be countered by most instant-speed removal.

Combos & Synergies

Griselbrand pairs excellently by drawing cards to fill your graveyard while providing life gain for survival. Traverse the Ulvenwald becomes a powerful tutor once delirium is active, helping assemble the card types needed for cost reduction. Self-mill engines like Satyr Wayfinder and Grapple with the Past accelerate the graveyard strategy while hitting different card types to maximize the discount.
