Why Play Buried Ruin

Artifact-based decks appreciate having a land that doubles as insurance against removal and board wipes. The ability to recur key artifacts like Wurmcoil Engine, Mindslaver, or expensive mana rocks provides crucial late-game value while requiring minimal deck space. Since it enters untapped and produces colorless mana, the opportunity cost is relatively low in decks that can afford the colorless mana base.

Format Notes

Commander sees the most play for Buried Ruin, where artifact strategies are popular and the singleton format makes recursion effects particularly valuable. Modern artifact decks occasionally include it as a one-of utility land, though faster strategies may skip it for more aggressive options. Legacy and Vintage rarely utilize it due to the format speed and availability of more efficient recursion spells.

Combos & Synergies

Trading Post creates an engine where you can sacrifice artifacts for value, then use Buried Ruin to return them for repeated use. Academy Ruins provides a similar but more powerful effect in decks that can afford the higher activation cost and want multiple recursion outlets. Goblin Welder and other artifact reanimation effects work well alongside Buried Ruin, giving you multiple ways to abuse powerful artifacts like Spine of Ish Sah or Myr Battlesphere.
