Eldraine

Eldraine is a fairy tale-inspired plane in Magic: The Gathering that debuted in the 2019 set Throne of Eldraine. Drawing heavily from Arthurian legend, European fairy tales, and medieval fantasy tropes, Eldraine presents a world of knights, courts, magical food, and enchanted adventures that captured players’ imaginations and became one of the most beloved and powerful sets in recent Magic history.

Overview

Eldraine operates as a realm where fairy tale logic meets medieval society, divided into five courts that correspond to Magic’s five colors. The Realm is ruled by the High King Kenrith and consists of the Court of Ardenvale (White), the Court of Vantress (Blue), the Court of Locthwain (Black), the Court of Embereth (Red), and the Court of Garenbrig (Green). Each court embodies the philosophical ideals and magical practices of its associated color while maintaining the fairy tale aesthetic that defines the plane.

The plane’s magic system centers around the concept of virtue and worthiness, with knights questing to prove themselves and magical artifacts that respond to noble deeds. The Wilds beyond the courts are filled with dangerous creatures, magical food that grants temporary powers, and enchanted forests where fairy tale creatures dwell. This creates a natural tension between civilization (the courts) and the untamed magical wilderness that surrounds them.

Adventure, one of Eldraine’s signature mechanics, represents the fairy tale tradition of going on quests before settling down. Cards with Adventure can be cast first as instant or sorcery spells representing the adventure, then later cast from exile as creatures representing the character who completed that quest. This mechanic perfectly captures the storytelling nature of fairy tales while providing unique gameplay options that allow players to get extra value from their cards.

Key Cards

Oko, Thief of Crowns stands as perhaps the most infamous card from Eldraine, a three-mana planeswalker that dominated multiple formats before being banned. Its ability to turn opposing threats into 3/3 Elk tokens proved too powerful for competitive play, but it remains a testament to Eldraine’s impact on Magic.

Embercleave exemplifies the set’s Equipment theme with its flash ability and cost reduction based on the number of attacking creatures. This legendary Equipment can single-handedly end games when it surprises opponents by equipping to an attacking creature at instant speed.

Brazen Borrower showcases the Adventure mechanic perfectly, starting as Petty Theft to bounce an opponent’s nonland permanent before becoming a flying creature. Its versatility and efficient stats made it a staple across multiple formats.

Questing Beast became legendary for its extensive rules text, featuring vigilance, deathtouch, haste, and multiple other abilities that make it a Swiss Army knife of a creature. This four-mana Beast represents the complexity that fairy tale monsters can achieve in Magic.

The Great Henge provides explosive ramp and card advantage for creature-based strategies, with a cost reduction mechanism that rewards playing large creatures. This legendary artifact embodies the magical monuments found throughout fairy tale landscapes.

Murderous Rider demonstrates the Adventure mechanic’s removal capabilities, beginning as Swift End to destroy creatures or planeswalkers before becoming a lifelink creature. Its adventure into creature progression mirrors the fairy tale arc of overcoming challenges.

Fires of Invention enabled powerful combo strategies by allowing players to cast two spells per turn without paying mana costs, though it restricted casting to sorcery speed. This enchantment sparked numerous creative deck constructions before eventual banning.

Gilded Goose provides early mana acceleration through Food tokens while maintaining relevance in the late game with its flying body. This one-mana creature became a format staple for its utility and flexibility.

Strategy

Eldraine rewards players who embrace both aggressive strategies and value-oriented gameplay through its diverse mechanics. Adventure cards provide natural card advantage by offering two spells in one card, making them excellent choices for players who want to maximize their resources. The key to playing Adventure cards effectively lies in timing—using the adventure portion when you need immediate impact and holding the creature portion for when board presence matters most.

Food tokens create a secondary resource system that rewards long-term planning and creature-based strategies. Cards that generate multiple Food tokens can provide significant life gain over time while enabling other synergies. The mana cost of sacrificing Food tokens (two mana and the token to gain three life) means you need to plan ahead to use them efficiently, but they provide crucial inevitability in longer games.

Equipment strategies thrive in Eldraine thanks to powerful options like Embercleave and various Knights that synergize with artifacts. The flash ability on key Equipment pieces means you can surprise opponents during combat, turning seemingly small attacks into lethal damage. Building around Equipment requires balancing creatures that can carry them effectively with the Equipment pieces themselves.

The five courts provide excellent manabase options through their legendary lands, each offering both colored mana and powerful activated abilities. These lands reward deck construction that can support their activation costs while providing late-game mana sinks that can swing close games. Managing these lands effectively often determines success in longer, more controlling strategies.

In Commander

Eldraine provides exceptional options for Commander players across all five colors and numerous archetypes. The legendary creatures from the set, particularly the various Knights and court nobles, offer focused commanders for tribal strategies while maintaining enough power level for competitive tables.

Kenrith, the Returned King stands as one of the most versatile commanders available, providing all five colors of color identity while offering multiple activated abilities that support various strategies. His ability to return creatures from graveyards, grant haste and trample, draw cards, and gain life makes him suitable for group hug, politics, or combo strategies depending on deck construction.

Adventure cards excel in Commander’s longer games because the extra value from having two spells on one card provides significant advantages over multiple opponents. Cards like Brazen Borrower and Murderous Rider offer flexibility that becomes increasingly valuable as games develop and board states become complex.

Food tokens provide sustainable life gain that matters more in Commander’s higher life total format. Cards that generate multiple Food tokens can help players survive longer and enable more expensive strategies. The tokens also provide material for various sacrifice-based strategies while serving as a mana sink in the late game.

The court-based legendary lands fit perfectly into Commander’s singleton format, providing powerful utility lands that don’t compete with basic land counts. These lands offer late-game activated abilities that can break stalemates while providing necessary colored mana throughout the game.

Notable Interactions

Eldraine cards create numerous powerful synergies both within the set and with cards from Magic’s broader history. Adventure cards interact uniquely with effects that care about spells in exile, such as Kess, Dissident Mage, which can cast adventure portions from exile for additional value. Similarly, cards that return instant and sorcery spells from graveyards can recur adventure cards even after they’ve been cast as creatures.

Food tokens enable artifact-based strategies while providing incidental life gain. Cards like Krark-Clan Ironworks can sacrifice Food tokens for mana, while Cauldron Familiar creates an engine with Food sacrifice that provides repeated value. The interaction between Food generation and sacrifice creates sustainable loops that can generate significant advantages.

Equipment from Eldraine, particularly Embercleave, synergizes powerfully with token-generation strategies. The cost reduction on Embercleave means that wide strategies can potentially cast it for as little as two mana while providing double strike to end games immediately. This interaction makes token strategies much more threatening when backed by powerful Equipment.

The Adventure mechanic interacts uniquely with effects that care about casting cost or spell types. Cards that reduce costs affect both the adventure portion and creature portion separately, while effects that trigger on instant or sorcery spells can trigger from adventure portions. This creates layered interactions that reward careful deck construction and sequencing.

Mill strategies can inadvertently help opponents by putting adventure creatures into graveyards where they can still be cast as creatures if the adventure portion was milled. This makes traditional mill less effective against Eldraine-heavy strategies while creating opportunities for self-mill strategies to generate additional value from their own adventure cards.
